The Republic's Opinion

http://hneolive.therepublic.com/Default/Scripting/ArticleWin.asp?From=Archive&Source=Page&Skin=TheRepublic&BaseHref=TRP/2011/01/02&PageLabel=B4&EntityId=Ar01201&ViewMode=HTML

Quotes from The Republic op-ed:

"It was an unspeakable tragedy and it has raised several questions about whether the county is prepared to handle such situations. It has also brought forth unsubstantiated charges that local governments have spent public money on other projects while neglecting to expend what some consider to be modest amounts for life saving equipment."

"The charges have largely been knee jerk reactions based on little or no factual information."

"It is important they be addressed by the agencies participating in the upcoming meeting and answered in such a manner as to end this uninformed speculation."

"The decisions that should emerge must be based upon a reasoned and informed review of these kinds of situations. Finger pointing and uniformed accusations will only complicate matters."

The Republic sure has Bob pegged:
  • unsubstantiated charges
  • knee jerk reactions
  • little or no factual information
  • uninformed speculation
  • finger pointing
  • uninformed accusations

it is sad that this incident has brought a negative look from rescue dive teams all across the state. this is a fact, because i have friends on several dive teams across the state and they have ask me about this incident. i have kept my mouth shut on the subject, because i know it would do no good. after getting the calls i have gotten, i really think something needs to be done, especially knowing we have divers here in town that would be happy to help. unfortunately, with bob ranting the way he is, it is hindering any form of improvement to the situation.

I believe the ONLY way this boy's life could have been saved, is if he would have never taken the risk that he did.
Accidents happen, and sometimes the outcome is going to be the same no matter how it is handled, once the accident commences.

The lucky thing from this incident, is that two of the three victims survived.

We do not live in a perfect world where accidents are never fatal.
Loss of life occurs even when every precaution and all safety measures are in place.

I think we should all realize that if a qualified ice/cold water team was at the scene even ONE SECOND after the ice broke, this boy MAY HAVE still lost his life.
We do not know if he would still be alive, BUT
we do not know if he would still have perished.
WE DO NOT KNOW!
What we DO KNOW is that if these three had not been walking on the thin ice of this lake, the unfortunate boy would not have died from falling in.
I am very sorry this happened, but creating a debate will not bring him back.

The ONLY guarantee that this will not happen to another, is to NOT WALK ON FROZEN LAKES!
EASY SOLUTION - ONLY SOLUTION

People make mistakes, and sometimes the result is very bad.

@Robert: Great comment!

Robert, you are exactly right. The man that saved 2 of the 3 boys wanted to make sure that the only coverage he received was about ice safety. Good comment.

I do not subscribe to the Republic, but this seems to be evidence that even though the Republic makes mistakes and oversights, they are still much more thorough and professional than Columbuzz.

When Bob Freeman comments on something, anything, it automatically discredits the entire cause. He needs to mind his own retarded business over on Lilac.

Shame Bob didn't walk across the ice.
