Bob the Snob hates it when others are praised, and spoken well of, while he sits in his gossip-mongering squalor of lies, vulgarity, and condescension.
The alleged comments had nothing to do with the Republic's story of Allen Smith. It's just Bob saying, "HEY! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!"
